How to ask for bond, insurance and licensing information

When hiring a contractor for your irrigationb project, it's crucial to verify their licensing and insurance to protect yourself and ensure the work is done properly. Here's how to ask for this information:

Direct request for certificates and license numbers

  • Clearly communicate your requirements to the contractor, explaining that you need a certificate of insurance (COI) as part of your agreement, specifying the types of coverage and minimum limits required.
  • Ask the contractor for their license number and copies of their insurance certificates.
  • A certificate of insurance (COI) outlines key details like:
    • Types of coverage (general liability, workers' compensation, etc.)
    • Policy limits and expiration dates
    • The names of the insured party and the certificate holder
    • The name of the insurance company or broker
  • Ensure the COI names you as an additional insured on their general liability insurance.

Verify with the authorities

NCICLB

  • Licensing: Visit your state's licensing board website (e.g., in North Carolina, it's the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors) and use their online verification tool. Enter the contractor's license number, name, or company name to check their license status. Alternatively, you can call the licensing board to verify.
  • Insurance: Contact the insurance company directly, using the information provided on the COI, to verify that the policies are active and provide the necessary coverage. You may need to provide the policy number to the insurer.
  • Bonding: If the contractor is bonded, ask for the bond number and verification details, then verify with the surety company that the bond is appropriate for your project needs.

Red Flags

  • Vague claims: Be cautious if a contractor claims to be "licensed and insured" but cannot provide specific details or a COI.
  • Reluctance to provide information: A reputable contractor will be transparent and willing to provide all necessary documentation.
  • Pushing you to get permits: This could be a sign the contractor is unlicensed.

Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed

Taking these steps to verify your contractor's license and insurance is vital for protecting yourself from potential fraud, legal issues, and financial liabilities.
